Jason - it's only paper towel, not an expensive item so I would change it weekly. Wasn't this discussed previously? As for checking for bacteria - unless you are a scientist with an electron microscope you cannot know there is none lurking. As a matter of fact I can guarantee you that there are! Just change weekly - why take chances with the health of your pets???

Please, Please, Please, Please just change the paper towels.
At least once a week pull the old ones out and put new ones in.

Because of temperature and humidity your entire enclosure is a perfect place to breed bacteria. Using paper towels is a shortcut to help you extend the amount of time between enclosure cleanings. Leaving the paper towels in there as long as you have is simply undo-ing your shortcut. You are now contributing to the bacteria farm, and shortening the time between necessary enclosure cleanings.

Sacrafice the time and expense to keep fresh paper towels in your enclosure... Please, Please, Please, Please, Please!

Change the paper towels at least 1 time per week. They are not an expensive substrate by any stretch of the imagination and it only takes a few seconds to change it. Just how did you come to the conclusion that there is not bacteria present? Do you have some special Bacteria light or microscope? There is Bacteria whether you want to admit it or not. More than likely there are a few different types of bacteria and probably a few different types of molds of fungus. Bacteria are microscopic organisms and Most Mold and Fungus are not visible to the naked eye so there is no way you can look at the paper towels and say that there is no Bacteria.
