feeding roaches...

lele Jul 25, 2005 10:48 AM

Hi All,

Darwin has been enjoying adult discoid roaches (finally!) and I am wondering how many he can eat in a day. He seems to be getting very picky even though his diet is QUITE varied! He get crickets, clover flowers, dandelion, squash, pellets, all sorts of goodies. But I am glad he like the roaches so I can slowly do away with the crickets altogether.

Is two sufficient or should I be offering him more?

thanks

Same feeding rules with crickets, as much as he can eat in a 5-10 minute period. Unless he is fully adult, in which you can feed him the same amount of roaches as you did crickets. Unless the roaches are significantly smaller than crickets, then feed more.

Well, that would be none! lol! He is not big on the chase and unless I stand by and prompt the roach out of hiding (or give it to him in a cup) he'd starve. He does like them, though.

thanks

I would not feed adults as the wings are hard to digest.

hmmm...he is pooping OK (usual 2x/day). Do you feed them to your adult dragons?

The only animals that get fed adult roaches are the Tegus and as a RARE treat, (less than once a month) the Rhino Igs. Many times wings dont digest well and eating a bunch of adults might lead to a problem so it's easier just to feed juvies, besides they are meatier.

I got a bunch a while back to start a colony and all I have left are adults - ugh. The babies are too tiny. Maybe I can find someone to trade with me.
