Anoles in they eyes of the pros

Vivarium Jul 16, 2003 09:05 AM

Many of us who keep lizards start out with green anoles as pets, and later graduate to more expensive, rarer cirtters to captive-bed. Becuase of their abunadance, not many peple try to breed green anoles. In fact, I've noticed that even some hard-core anole keepers in America look down their noses at both green and brown anoles, considering them childish herp pets or mere kingsnake food. I'd like to hear some opinions on that from the rest of you.

i know exactly what you mean. but anoles (carolinensis and segrei)are not good beginner pets. they need to be fed over a span of a few hours(not one clump at a time)and they are hard to see signs of disease. people that look down upon them are simply idiots. im sorry to say that but they are. if anoles cost 100$ like the gold dust day geckos or something they would be prized possesions. and everyone can agree with that. but it is hard to change societies eyes so unless something happens, like maybe people getting common sense, i feel that anoles will always be considered lowly. i love them though and they will always be a part of my herp collection. right beside my rarities!

I must admit that I like anoles though I keep varanids due to space. I will be getting myself a trio of bark anoles for a birthday present (it's 7/19). I have an egg incubating now from them given to me by my friend. I 've hatched out eggs ( from greens, barks, browns) from pet stores that I asked them for.

They are a great species to learn how to incubate eggs not saying they're dispensible but they are common & easy enough to breed for a beginer just give them some dirt & wa`lla.

The fact is they are pests in many parts of southeastern america, thats why they are so cheap. Since there escapes in Japan, Australia and India these animals have been called ferral. Anoles are very adaptable and spieces that are not naturally found have been introduced, causing problems for natural wild life. They are great animals, and amazing to watch but they are cheap for a reason. Think of anoles as mice and a black and white tegu as a sugar glider, its not as if anoles do anything but eat and run, if you cant figure out why anoles are cheap and other spieces are expensive....maybe you should take a closer look.

I see what you're saying, but remember what HerpGirl said: gold dust day geckos are expensive, yet they are similar to green anoles. Thye have been introduced to parts of the south Paific where they do not belong, yet they are still expensive. I refuse to pay more than $25 for tiny gecko, no matter how much effort went into breeding them.

That's a bit harsh, too. It's obvious why they're cheap in the U.S., but exactly how are they pests?

I think anoles are very cool, but if they're so common, people are just not going to be as intersted, period.

Burmuda Jul 24, 2003 06:48 PM

They get into peoples houses, their feces attract insects, they attract larger predatory animals. thats why they are pests.

Lol, I think anoles are the least thing to worry about in the south. I guess I'm just blind to it then.

*sighs8 yall act like they are the size of rats. I live in florida and they are not PESTS. If we didnt hae the anoles we would have more misqoties and biting flys and more spiders and bugs we dont like. The anoles are a key species in a nichie that yall take them from and then acclaim to know more about how they live then yall do. Misting every day glass aquiraims.. I wouldnt even allow yall to have a rat as a pet.. now thats harsh. Anoles are not pests the pest anoles are the cuban knight anoles who eat our local lizards and throw the balance off and who have gotten to hawii and consider a threat to their way off life ( and they will cost you about 40 bucks ? irnoic) Green anoles arent the pest they where here first its more the cuban brown anole that is the pest running out the green anoles and doing not as much work as the green does. I am lucky to have two speices in my yard living so well together and trying to breed toghether. Pests pets are rats and mice and if you feel they are pests maybe you should keep them!

Just to clear things up, I live in Miami and I certainly do NOT think they're pests. The knights are usually too high up to bother the rest, the greens are native, and the only things the browns do is compete with the greens for food, and maybe be a little aggressive, although they're more terrestrial. So, I don't harbor any dislike for any of them, I think they're great to have!

They was simply made to keep the little anole from breeding tomuch. My cuban only has Little Green and Brown anoles as treats and they are well respected reptilis. I just dont buy them to see them eaten. I buy them so that one creation can live on. Cuban Anoles a far from being pests unlike that incident in hawaii when a Cuban and A Iguana got together and went on a tagteam effort tererising the citie. Cubans are great species and need to be talked about more by the way your right i payed $40 for mine i thought it was steep but that the price you pay when you live in the center of the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA!
