Need help shipping geckos..

mateo Jul 16, 2003 09:19 AM

Hi I am moving tommorow night for california and need to ship out my geckos before I leave. I live in Florida (hot) and am having my geckos shipped to Southern California (hot). Should I send my geckos via USPS post office to post office so they stay in air conditioned enviroment? Or should I buy cold packs? Or would they just be OK delivered straight to my house in California with no special treatment? Please help.
Feel free to email me at reggaemane@hotmail.com. Thank you.

How many leos do you have??? If you only have a couple then you may be able to take them on the plane as carry-ons in a little case (since people rarely are allergic to reptiles, just scared of them). I was at Petco the other day and saw a really cute, cloth carrying case for a small animal like a cat or a rabbit or something. It looked like a small black duffel bag but had cloth screening around half of the sides...you would just have to put some paper towels down for the leos or even better, an old hand towel. The bag could probably hold 5 or 6 leos comfortably. If you did bring them in a bag as carry-ons you would have to call the airline ahead of time to see if you could do this and if so, arrange to have the bag checked manually instead of going through the little Xray machine.
If you have to ship, then don't use cold packs. Cold packs would probably lower the temps too much. Just put them in the crate by themselves. I would arrange it so the nearby post office could hold the box for you instead of having it shipped to your door (you never know if your flight may be delayed). Actually, Airborne express is supposed to be the best way to ship animals since it is fast but I have never shipped any of my pets so I couldn't really give you any hands on experience.

Well, wouldn't you be able to have them with you in your trip???, I would recomend to do it through UPS next day air, but you have to make sure to be there by the time they get there, if the temp is over 95 all the way, and there too, i would put i cold pack...I actually just shipped one from Gainesville, Fl to CA and i dint put anything and she got there straight...

I called delta.. they will not allow any animals on the plane. however I could have the shipped as 'pet cargo' (along with dogs and cats I suppose).. in which they would have to package the geckos for me and would cost a total of $175.

what part of SoCal are you moving too? i live about a half hour west of the coast and just north of San Diego, and it's really hot here, 95 - 100 during the day. but nearer to the coast its not very hot at all, like 80 maybe.

Orange County.. Mission Viejo. I checked weather.com and it said it was gonna be 85high/65low on Friday. Its about 85 here in FL as well. I think I'm gonna ship with a coldpack.

I saw this idea on [bleep].com. Well anyways instead of buying a colpack, just freeze a sponge and put it in a ziploc bag. I havent tried it, but I heard it works pretty good.

if it's only 85, why get a cold pack at all?

If its 85 outside... think about how hot it is in a van sitting in the sun.. that tin can turns into an oven.

If you label the box correctly, most carriers will have the drivers hold it in the air-conditioned cab. Plus, I think some of the carriers have the whole truck air-conditioned.
