KFOR (Oklahoma City, Oklahoma) 22 July 05 Little Axe man says poison control gave bad info after child snakebit
Norman, Oklahaoma (AP): A Little Axe man says he was given poor information from the state Poison Control Center about how to treat his 6-year-old granddaughter after she was bitten by a snake.
Jack Johnson says he was told to clean the wound and let the child play after she was bitten Sunday. On Monday the girl was admitted to Children's Hospital in Oklahoma City with a swelling leg.
Johnson says poison control officials acted as if the bite was no big deal and didn't tell him how to properly treat the wound.
But poison center director Lee Goodwin says Johnson didn't have enough information about the snake when he first called and was told to watch the girl for symptoms after giving basic first aid. Goodwin says the center tried several times to call the Johnsons back to check on the girl but got no answer.
Johnson says he originally didn't know what kind of snake had bitten his granddaughter and says he's since learned it was a baby copperhead.
