do tegus tails break off?

toxicogenic Jul 25, 2005 05:44 PM

hey im new to the tegu forum but know about tegus. im usually in snakes or frogs. i was curious do tegus tails break off? (autotomy) i know monitors tails don't break off. ummm...i have been wanting to get a tegu for a while so i have been reading anything i can get my eyes on. my concern is cage size. if by a miracle im allowed to have one of these i would have it in my room. eventually when big and tame enough i'll let him have free roam for a while each day. but any cage dimensions will help. and also home-made cage sizes too. (my grandpa is a carpenter) thanks a lot

smaller tegus will drop their tails - I don't think large ones do or at least it's just difficult for them to.

I don't lift any of mine by thier tails or anything - but I do grab them by thier tails to pull them out of cages or what not.

in his tail. It gets worse until he sheds and it straightens back out. Sometime the tip gets irritated and I put triple antibiotic on it.
