Where's the hole?!

herper Jul 25, 2005 06:17 PM

My chucks have been active alot lately. One of them has been busy digging a hole for the last few days. Kind of a flat horizontal crack really. It was there Saturday afternoon and yesterday morning. Then in the afternoon you couldn't tell there was ever a hole there. They even scattered leaf litter over it and make tracks through the leaf litter.
Does that mean what I think it does? Should I just leave it or dig the eggs out? They're in a gus style 8' x 10' pen out in open sunlight. I wonder if the 100° weather set off her biological clock.

Thats a flip of the coin whether to dig em or leave em. I leave mine where ever they are. Here in houston I have not lost a clutch of Chuck eggs in the ground yet!! I was concerned that too much rain/ clouds etc would lower the ground temp enough to causew losses. So far so good. Yes--- they can do a great job of hiding the nest site. I have had a couple of girls that would stand guard for maybe a week after laying & run off any chuck that got too close. Last summer was cloudy, cool & wet and the babies were 2 weeks later than I figured popping out.

If the exposure is similar to that of habitat-- I would say let em be.

Thanks for the help, David. I was leaning that way but it drives me crazy not to have any control of the situation. Looks like I'll be having some mutts of my own if all goes well, LOL! They are from a panda female and either a redtail or panda male. My guess would be the redtail.
