sulcata newbie

toaster529 Jul 25, 2005 10:03 PM

I just purchased my first sulcata.
The people at the store said that this
crushed walnuts substrate was ok. By looking
at the tortoise, however, it seems like when he
gets wet, all those small pieces stick to him and
get up in his cracks and crevases. :

Seriously, it looks uncomfortable. Should I switch?

thx.

well you should go with some real substrat. Not crushed walnuts and what ever. I say you should build a outdoor pen. Eventualy in a few years you need to because sulcatas are the 3 largest tort. in the world and will walk right through your walls of your hous. You need to plan a big enclosure so you might want to build a small out door pen and add on to it while he grows. Unless you plan to adopt him away before he gets to big.

Crushed walnut shells are hard and indigestible. If the little guy eats some, it could cause impaction and possibly death.

You can use newspaper as a temporary substrate.
