Veiled won't eat

cammyleon Jul 26, 2005 09:37 AM

My female veiled chameleon is over 6 months old and pretty big for her age. I've noticed she has been a lot more green lately with blue spots all over her body. I think she might be ready to breed, the only problem is is that she will hardly eat anything(this has been going on for a few days) and I am not sure if this has anything to do with the breeding cycle. I work from home so I can watch her all day and she is VERY active but she ALWAYS eats her food. What could be the problem?

Is she gravid? Remember, females can form egg clutches without mating. Has she gained a lot of weight lately and does she look lumpy in the abdomen? As eggs mature they crowd internal organs and the female may not eat as they get close to laying. If she starts spending a lot of time on the cage floor and digging around the bottom she needs a laying area for her eggs. How often and how much do you feed her? If you are feeding every day try reducing to every other day...she's about ready for this anyway.

I agree with carlton, sounds like your fem is gravid. My fem veiled cham hardly eats when she is heavily gravid and this lasts around a week. I know after my cham lays she is ravenous and will eat enormous amounts the first couple of days after. Have you provided her with sand in a container about 1 foot deep for her to dig in and lay?? The sand should be quite damp, like the sand you need to build a sand castle. Also it needs to be kept warm, I use heat tape wrapped around the outside of a solid pottery pot with vines and branches inserted so she can get in there and explore.

I dont know, she doesnt really look gravid...but this is my first chameleon so maybe I just can't really tell. She does walk on the ground a little bit and all over the cage a lot. I put a big bowl with moist dirt in her cage so she has a spot to lay if she is gravid. I am just really worried because it isnt like her to stop eating, she always eats a lot. It has been about 4 days so far since she has a real meal. Yesterday she just ate one cricket that was walking around the cage.
