High dollar morphs: Initial offering prices

jmartin104 Jul 26, 2005 11:46 AM

When new morphs came out, the initial prices were high. I'm trying to determine the 5 most expensive morphs based on their initial offerings, not current price.

This is an interesting idea. One might also consider the highest RELATIVE price. For instance, when the Albino came onto the scene I'm sure it was considerably more expensive than the next highest morph. (Since there was no other morph, the Albino cost was probably close to 10000% higher than the normal.) This is a big leap in price!

Thats kind of hard to say the top 5 initial prices.. Because almost every morph was $25,000 to $75,000 when it was 1st produced... Id suggest looking at each morph how many years its been in circulation. Some morphs are liked more therefor produced more.. It also depends on who's collection the new morph is in some breeders have more resources and more females then others... Also, what the breeder feels the snake is worth... All plays part in the initial price also we have dominant and co-dominant animals so some are more easily duplicated then others because you dont have to raise up hets. But at the same time you have to have the morph to produce some... Just my 2 cents.. That is a very interesting topic..

Albino
Pied
Snow
Clown
Mojave

Now, were there more expensive morphs than these?

We'll never know what they actually sold for. Maybe I should be asking for stabilized pricing? I know I paid $4,500 for my VPI albino hatchling way back when.

I was reading Reptiles Magazine and saw the first Albino Ball Python and just about had a heart attack I can't remember the exact price that they were discussing in the article, but I do remember it was a 5 digit figure. I still kick myself for not getting in back then.

I think I read somewhere that the Albino was $7500 originally. I'd wager the Leucistic was probably the overall highest. I seem to remember reading somewhere last year that one (WC?) was purchased for just over $100K cash.

I'll research a bit later.

I think the first lucy fetched somewhere around the 100-200K mark.

I know that the frist trio of Pieds were imported for like 80 grand, and took like 8 years to produce.

I'd say the highest price (for it's time) that anyone actually paid for a CB morph is the pied. When you think about it, at the time there wasn't this huge "ball market" we have today. Today you have Wilbanks charging 200K for a white snake and Ralph paying (I believe) 100K for his imported white snake. What's the most? Who knows...it's all about perceived value anyway.

Just my 2.5 cents.

Matt
