New toads on the block.

Convicts4Ever May 17, 2003 04:18 PM

Just got 3 Bombina orientalis,a.k.a., Oriental Firebelly Toads the other day All of the places around me sell them for $10.00 or more per toad. I went to a pet shop that sells reptiles and ordered them for $6.00 each. They're only 2 inches long and are in a 20 gallon tank with a land/water ratio of 1/3 land to 2/3 water. They ate the moment I got them home and are quite the characters. On a sid note did you know that their pupils are heart shaped? Well, thanks for reading!

It is my understanding that animals adapted to an aquatic existance may have oddly shaped pupils so they are able to see equally as well in water and in air. The refraction of water does not make it is easy for us to see underwater, for instance. Some surface loving fish may have 2 pairs of eyes that allow them to see in both medium, one pair for water and one pair for air. I don't know if this applies to these toads.

I just think it's neat. It's a more unusual shape compared with other toads/frogs.
