not in the USA as a federal law ! I mean that would include some rat snakes, bull snakes, many colubreds. The problem with that is I would think as a federal agenda/agency it would bleed over to herp shows and such. USDA only controls the species sold at pet stores and makes routine checks ( supposedly ) for permits if in fact a store is selling USDA regulatory animals that only deals with some so called exotics like Degus, sugar gliders, i think chins, hedgehogs, etc. To my knowledge, they don't have any control of reptiles. We were checked frequently by USDA and animal health and local animal control < only if a complaint was administered >. They NEVER included reptiles. That was checked by wildlife which we rarely saw in our doors. Now a city or township might have that as a law and that would be up to the local animal control agency. There has been some state issues of size of reptiles in stores but mostly on the publics part of keeping.

I keep [bleep]ing about ANY state law proposals or restrictions or bans with species and size when there are adequate local city and township laws in place. I DO NOT see where a state has to override such laws already in place. I have NEVER understood this ! I see no difference on city ordnances and laws ( many old ones still on the books ) of the J - Walking or spitting on public sidewalks laws. I mean you would never see this go before a state legislative agenda to over ride ! How about some of you on this subject ?

The USDA (US Department of Agriculture) does not regulate the breeding or selling of reptiles, period. Reptiles are not covered under the Animal Welfare Act - you can find the AWA on the main USDA website.
The USDA IS concerned with the import (now illegal) and interstate transport of sulcata, leopard, and Bell's hingeback tortoises, due to the risk of heartwater disease, transmitted by ticks that would come in on recent imports of some African reptiles, that could affect livestock. Interstate transport requires a vet certificate stating that the torts are tick free (required within 30 days before transport), nothing more.
