Any experts on the plants of Madagascar?

anson Jul 26, 2005 04:49 PM

I am working on a painting of a pair of Ambilobe chams and would like to portray them on the type of foilage they would would be found on in Madagascar.
Does anyone have a good link to any sites showing plantlife in Madagascar or information on the types of plants Ambilobe chams would frequent.

While I don't know exactly what an Ambilobe Panther would be hanging out on I found a good link for Malagasy plants. Maybe this can help you some http://www.wildmadagascar.org/flora/

Good Luck

be in the Ambilobe region? When I search for Ambilobe region I get 4 different areas coming up. I can find photos of the national park.

No, Ambilobe is in North/Northwest of the country. Email me at cva3@cornell.edu and I can send you photos of this locale in the wild. I can't ID the plants in the pics but it might help to some extent.

Rhana is a great guy, lots of knowledge of the area and has some
very good photos too. he has a few sites so check them all out.

I suggest the video from chameleonnews or something (sorry). it's great as there are my photos as to the real flora and such.

getting the exact plants might be hard, we sell many of them but again it's really a basic set up. some plants for the ground, a few trees (depending on enclosure size). what size is yours?

I don't know anything about the Cham. but I collect dwarf succulents from Madagascar. Do a search on Euphorbias or Euphorbias of Madagascar (not all are dwarfs). Euphorbia is a huge genus and many come from there.

ChamNews has several articles on Madagascar that might help. Carl Cattau has a photo essay (maybe you can email him directly for some specific info) and Allison Banks has a lengthy "journey" as well (great article, btw). This one is not a mural but is a piece I am working on for the art show in Daytona if I get it done in time.
I am used to pressure!
I wish someone would hire me for a cham related mural.
I always end up doing tuscan scenes or cherubs on a domed ceiling. No one has ever had me do a rain forest scene which seems odd since that is what I do best.

what if you did a small one for display/portfolio and then market it or include in your work (if you can do that). I am just guessing here since I don;t know how the whole thing works, but I would think that someone in your blazing hot part of the earth (hahaha!) would love something like that - maybe Busch Gardens!!

Since I do some of their picture framing. You are right it is really BLAZING here right now. It is even too hot for me and that says a lot. When you go outside right now your skin gets so hot it actually burns like you are being cooked in an oven. I have never felt it get this hot before. It rained today and even that did not cool it. Just the hot steam started rising up from the ground. We usually stay a bit cooler than this due to sea breezes but the ones we are getting now are like hot air blowing at you.

...those Gulf breezes? A lot of hooey! lol!!
