Color Change Question...

MegF Jul 26, 2005 08:40 PM

When GT's go thru their ontogenic changes, do they change after a shed, or do the scales just change color one day? I've heard that they can change literally overnight, or over a period of days, months or years.

i cant speak from experience because i only own two and only one has already changed, but i hear that it can happen anyway, but changing slowly over weeks or months is most common.the one i own that changed didnt do so untill almost 2 years old,and when he decided to change,he went from solid yellow(canary looking) to green and blue in about 48 hours.no joke.one day you couldnt even find one green scale,then,48 hours later,he was completely changed to green and blue.this was a few months ago and has stayed that color ever since.its because of this experience that i am a bit leary of canarys.the way my snake looked at 2 years old,the week before he changed,i could have sold him in the classifides as a canary and noone would have doubted me for a second.he really was huge for still being yellow.and besides,he had lost all the darker bands that are present in yellow juvies.he was entirely yellow.again im no expert, just my experience with a changling.it was enough for me to go out and buy another.

i forgot to add that a shed had nothing to do with it,well at least with my snake.he went from yellow to green,in 48 hours and no shed.he didnt shed for another month and a half after changing.and even after shedding his colors were exactly the same as preshed with the exception of looking cleaner and brighter.

Thanks for the reply. I guess I'll just keep watch. How old were yours when they first started changing? Mine's nearly a year old!

She's a Sarong type and no, she's never offered to bite. Very calm and gentle. Really curious too. She likes to check everything out.

The color change has nothing to do with the shed cycle. Ontogenetisis is different for every animal and even varies with animals from the same clutch. I've had some literally change in 4 days. Most take several weeks to a couple of months and with Biak types, expect them to take their sweet time......several years.

most usually start to change at 8-12 months old. I've had a couple start at less than 4 months and others at 15 months.

It's been documented in the lemon tree line of color change as quickly as 10 days after birth.

Thanks all for your comments. I'll just keep watching.....and watching....I love doing that anyway. They are so fascinating to sit and watch at night. Unfortunately, the other night I dreamed that she had started changing color and I was trying to take pictures of her and she was escaping from her viv....then I stressed her out and she regurged. I guess this is more than I can take! Maybe I need professional help!

I'd have to see it to believe it. Most babies are just beginning to shed after 10 days. One might stay yellow, but I have a hard time believing that the juvinile pattern would completely transform at 10 days. I want to see pics!
