tempermant question

iceyesnteeth Jul 26, 2005 09:23 PM

do you guys think that a chondros temperment can actually be improved through regular handling? i tend to think that a chondro is either gonna be nasty or nice and you really cant "tame" one.mine is really great and has only bitten when a baby.once he hit a year old he settled down and was great.i dont think this was from taming because i never handled him for almost a year.i remembered him biting a lot as a baby, then a year later i tried again and he was great.i just think that some settledown as they grow and this is preceived as taming, when it would have happened anyway wether you held him often or not.but then again this is just my opinion.do you guys think reptiles are that intelligent?they can remember people and act differently the next time?? or do they function more by instinct and react the same as they would normaly react.it makes sence to act skittish as juvies because they have more natural enemys.when adults they naturally have little or none so they have less reason to be scared and waste energy biting and making a fuss.i dont know,my opinion is if you think you can tame a chondro, youre giving them way too much credit.they are not dogs.id like to know what others think.i think this is an important topic since temperment is so often asked about by newbys/

You hit the nail on the head. Its also been proven that gentics has alot to do with chondro temperment.

I've found theres not much you can do to curve a chondros attitude. There are some that just wont bite if you wanted to and some that are more than happy to bite. However, I firmly belive that all reptiles are not to be trusted and you should always have your guard up no matter what the species.

One thing i love about chondros is you can not handel them for months and they will stay calm.

I currently have 28 chondro 18 babies 10 adults only 1 of my adults is nippy.

hey its just something that i observed but needed another opinion on because like i said,i only own 2 chondros.its really funny what you said about owning so many chondros and only one is nippy.before i decided to purchase my first chondro,i hesitated for many years.the main reason why i wasnt sure if i really wanted one,is because of what i had heard so many times about their temperment and the exagerated description of their teeth.i had heard that they couldnt be held and that their teeth were a couple inches long.ha ha ha ....i had always loved the way they looked but just accepted it as fact that they were pretty but needed to be handled with as much caution as a "hot"snake.anyway, thanks again and i hope this info might prevent someone from causing their chondro unnessesary stress by handling a nippy snake daily in hopes that it will somehow learn to be nice.it may actually cause the snake to be more aggressive since everytime it sees a person it knows it is going to be messed with.
