wondering what to put together in a naturalistic setup

stage9 Jul 26, 2005 10:12 PM

I know that combining species is not generally reccomended, but I am willing to do what it takes to make it work. What species would be ok? I am looking for any advice, so please help me out.
-Thanks

it depends on what type of setup or main species you want to do. the most common mixed tank is a viquarium, half land and half water. a company used to make a plastic waterfall/creek/retaining wall perfect for this setup. they dont make it anymore and it was about $80 anyways. to do it yourself you can pile up gravel in one end and put a whisper 10i or microfilter (same thing different name) in the water end. you may want to put a couple big rocks in the middle to keep the gravel from leveling out faster. there is also a turtle wall or something like that. it is a plastic retaining wall that you can silicone into any 12 inch wide tank. it will keep water on one side only if you seal it right with aquarium sealant. this allows you to keep the land dry or even put in topsoil and grow plants. good animals for a tank liek this would be anoles, day geckos, treefrogs, newts, fire belly toads, dwarf african clawed frogs, fish, snails, freshwater shrimp. dont put in something like a turtle or a pacman frog, you wont have any animals that they can get a hold of. depending on what all you put in you can even do an african clawed frog or crayfish, but not together. they would pretty much have to be the only things in the water besides their food. i would put in a full spectrum fluorescent light and fixture as well as a relatively low watt heat lamp like 5o watts or so of a daylight basking lamp. under the basking lamp put a branch or two for the lizards/geckos. they have flexible branches perfect for your tank. most of these eat crickets, some eill eat prepared food like pellets. if you have any other questions just post them. good luck.
