anorexic african fat-tailed gecko

mistergecko Jul 26, 2005 11:58 PM

I have a 7 year old male that hasn't eaten regularly for about a year now. He does have occasional pigout sessions every few months, but for the most part he hasn't touched food. Needless to say he's lost a lot of weight, he's about half the width he used to be and I don't think he can go more than another 2-3 months loosing weight since his tail isn't what it used to be.

I think a part of it is that I've been away at college, and he's been cared for by my parents and sister. Maybe he's not familiar with them or they don't know his habits (I think that's it). He's always been a finicky eater. Sometimes he'll get really interested in the insect, staring it down and tracking it's movements, but he won't stike, or will just nudge it a little. Then he goes back to sleep. Usually though he would eat a few times a week, but now it's more like once a month at best.

I have three weeks to get him back on track before I go back to school (can't bring him with me), so I wanted to check here for advice before I take him to the vet for a stool check and maybe some fluid feeding. I have an extra heater on his warm end, so hopefully that helps, but if not, what are some tricks you have used?

Thanks,
mistergecko (that's my gecko's name)

first, wrong forum
second, I would start from the basics and make sure that you are providing everything that your AFT needs.
third, I would look for signs of illness. for leopard gecko people, many of us use drgecko.com a very comprehensive sign about health of our little pets. DrGecko might be helpful for you since their requirements are very similar. You might need to take your AFT to a vet if there are serious problems.

Try a new diet/Use supplements/Pay attention to your aft
