Alternative Food for my poison darts

kukucio Jul 27, 2005 02:16 AM

Hi, I'm from Malaysia and just got my hand on my first pair Dendrobates Auratus. I've been feeding them ants and fruitflies sometimes. But I was wondering if I can feed them meal worms/super worms because it is very hard for me to get the culture for the fruitflies. Please help out cause I'm afraid of my new babies future.

Regards
Jon

mealworms and superworms are too big. Have you tried springtails?

What are spring tails ? I actually quite new in this area, But the meal worms i get are small and i don't think that my frogs will have a problem eating/swallowing them, its just that i'm worried that it is not the right diet. Its really hard for me to get the flightless fruit fly culture here in Malaysia because the exotic pets scene here is not really popular but now gaining its ground though. So please tell me if the meal worms are a correct diet or should i try alternative sources ?

Regards
Jonathan

Helo my friend from Malasia, I have kept allot of other species of frogs in the past and have obtained plenty of food by sweeping the local grasses and fields for insects.

You will want to avoid areas treated with harmful chemicals. Some insects are extremely distasteful and will not be eaten and some, like our lightning bugs here in the US are even toxic to many herps.

You may also with to visit a website doylesdartden.com and click on the link for care and choose feeding. He has some excellent info on feeding and rearing insects and fruitfly culture in your kitchen with ingredients readily availably in Malasia.
