Sleep walking?

captsub Jul 27, 2005 08:23 AM

Do igs sleepwalk? Mine fell off of her window sill last night. This was something I was afraid of when I got her so I installed a shelf right below the window to give her more room. I also set her futon up on the floor below the window so she wouldn't hurt herself if she fell. But she fell off anyway! She wasn't hurt 'cause she landed on the futon. BUT, she didn't wake up until I touched her. There she was spread eagle on the mattress, eyes closed. Was she sleepwalking? Anyone else have this happen?

I've heard that in the wild, green igs sometims faall to the ground. The rain-forest floor is a mat of decaying vegatation, and iguanas are tough, so no there is no harm to the ig.

Perhaps, knowing how deeply iguanas sleep, she just unconciously shifted her position, and rolled off her shelf. Then, in my hypothis, her landing was soft enough that there was no imerative to wake up.

Perhaps that is how it happened. Human children roll out of bed and stay asleep on the floor, too.

Igs don't actually sleep walk. They are sound sleepers and occasionally just fall. In the jungle they are in the top canopy. The branches and branchlets catch them...per Melissa Kaplan.

My G'Kar has fallen from shelf to shelf once that I know of.
His lights were off in his room and all of a sudden I heard this Bam, Crash. He was just laying there with his eyes closed. I thought he was unconscious and had injured himself. When I picked him up he scrambled away with that look in his eye that said....."What the heck are you doing in here turning on my lights and waking me up at this hour.....go away".
Until I posted this on an iguana board I had no idea. I watched him all the next day until someone answered my post. He didn't look injured but I just "knew" he was....silly precious green man.

I should sleep so soundly!

Touch passion when it comes your way, it's hard enough to find as it is. Don't walk away when it calls you by name.

Roger and SciFi gave you excellent responses.
Keep in mind that a lizard's (and crocodilian's) most relaxed position is arms resting close to the body, stretching back, similar to how crocs are on shores. That position makes the animal easily collapsible from a branch or shelf during sleep.
Iguanas fall off palm trees at tropical resorts many times, and scare the heck out of guests.

As long as there is cushioning to break the fall and prevent injuries, he's fine.

Thanks folks! I was a little worried myself. Every time I hear a noise in her room I scramble to check on her. At least with the futon below her she can't hurt herself. She has leaned into me so hard when I rub her dewlap that she has fallen over, but this is the first time (that I know of) she has fallen off her ledge.
