My RES died last night. I'm not sure when, i was going to feed them and he was floating. I knew he was dead. I'm going to scrub the tank today. How did he die? He was the only one that looked healthy besides the trianguling( my others are like stuck in not having enough clacium). His neck was kinda pinkish red. About the others, They still don't have enough calcium. The only thing i'm feeding them right now is greens. And maybe ham every once in a while. Can you help me?

Also, can anyone tell me of a filter that doesn't cost $200.00?

Well I cant really tell you why your turtle died. Tell us more about the setup, size, how many turtles, ect. Greens and ham isnt very nutrionial at all. First off there hatchlings so they need protien. Go to the petstore and buy a good pellet good. Either Mazuri (the best) or Reptomin. Also, while you are out buy a dozen or so feeder fish (rosies or guppies, NOT goldfish) for them to eat. Just put them in the tank, and they will chase them and catch them. You can continue feeding the greens like Romaine lettuce but only everyother day. Feed the pellets everyday, and always try to have some feeder fish in there tank.

About the filter... I would reccomend a HOT Magnum 250. It is a great canister filter that hangs on the back of your tank like a powerfilter. It is about $45 if you click on the link...

I had three turtles, in a 20 or 29 gallon tank. With an underground filter( I know its not the best, thats why I asked about a better filter). A heating pad, a basking rock, a heat lamp, and some rocks on the bottom. I know all about the feeding, I have pellets and guppies, but I have been trying to feed them things high in calcium because no there are 3 or 4 white spots on the shell. I used to feed them too much protien, wich is how they got the trianguling, you answered that question a long time ago. Also he was kinda floating awkward when he was in the water. The only thing I saw weird about him is the pinkish red throat. Thanks, bye.

Well your tanks to small, and yes an underground filter is pretty much worthless. A heating pad is also pretty much worthless. You need a submersible heater like an Ebo Jager or Tronic, set the temp for 80. For the basking area, can they get COMPLETLEY out of the water and dry off? Shell rot is not due to calcium deficency. Its from poor water condtions, and not being able to completly dry off.

Now I have 2 turtles so it's better. How can get the calcium back up?

Linda G Aug 01, 2005 10:22 AM

I raised my babies on these pretty much for the first couple
of years. These are nutritionally complete so you don't have
to worry about additional calcium. You need to do some research
on these guys and get their tank in tip top shape.

Everythings right, I've got the light and everything and am about to get a moonlight light for night. Its just that they don't have enough calcium. I have some Hatchling Aquatic Turtle food micro sized pellets. At first I always had rosies in there and lettuce 3 times a week with the pellets 3 different days. But when they all had spots i started to feed them more lettuce and greens. Is there any other way? Thanks, bye.

PHLaure Aug 01, 2005 11:25 PM

Lettuce is basically water and has no nutritional value. They need a balanced diet: guppies or minnows, crickets, mealworms, earthworms, dandelion greens, collard greens, Reptomin, etc. You can also try putting in a piece of cuttlebone (sold for birds) which they might gnaw on (some do, some don't).

Herpguy24 Aug 02, 2005 08:04 AM

I have had one in there since I have had them. They don't knaw on it so i'm thinking about taking it out. Dandalions are good right? And I live by a wetland and on the edge there are some small white flowers. Are those good? Thanks, bye.

I had to break the sticks in half to get my little guy intrested at first. It did take him several days to get over the stress of purchase. Once he got use to his new habitat, he started eating. What was he being fed before you purchased him?? It might help if you find that out before you start introducing a lot of new items. Hope it goes well.

Yes, dandelions are good. As to the white flowers, without knowing what they are, I can't say. You can find a list of safe plants here envhort.ucdavis.edu/ce/king/PoisPlant/SAFE-SCI.htm. Scroll to the bottom and there is a link to their list of toxic plants. Note, no list is 100% inclusive so if something is not on there and you're not sure, consider it not safe.

Supposedly high in calcium. My RES will chase me down for an earthworm. They are his favorite. He also loves to munch on snails. So does my boxie. They both treat them like candy!
