Might be a stupid question but when can I afford a morph??

Melisssss Jul 27, 2005 09:24 AM

How long do you think it will take for some of the morphs to come down to a more managable price for the not so well off snake keeper? I realize that this is not a popular question on this board but there is no way I could ever spend the going asking prices for say a spider or mohave. Please don't take offense to my question as it is not my intention to offend anyone by asking it. I am just trying to figure all of this out in my mind.

As I have been shown on here in the past, the price does more of "settling" than it does dropping. I for one know that I am going to have to be content with a "normal". Some of the prices are not too bad but don't expect a substancial drop. You might be able to find a breeder that will be willing to cut you a reduced rate -OR- you might be able to find one that is being adopted out from an animal rescue (our local one has an albino burm up for adoption) or in the classified ads in your local paper. Ones up for adoption may be hard to find, but you never know.

Thanks! That is what I have been trying to figure out. So I should look for a level price and then decide from there if I can dish out the cash?

I think I'll be sticking to Normals as well but that isn't necessarily a bad thing to me. Just sure would be nice to have some of the others one day.

My backgroud in animal pricing comes from show dogs and I have found that prices go depending on what movie is out with a dog in it (unfortunately aka Dalmations)or what breed has won a big show that year.

Are you interested in breeding your first morph? A pair of heterozygous animals should do the job...eventually.

I actually hadn't considered that. That could be really interesting and more of a challenge not to mention more affordable for me.

And when you make more babies than you want to keep, you can sell them and put the money towards buying something more expensive. This is how a lot of beginners build their collections. Time and work....

I am so glad people have responded like they have...Big Thanks! Time isn't a problem and hard work I enjoy so I think you all have helped me find a direction to go in. I'll keep my eyes looking for some interesting more affordable BPs and see where I can go from there. I am excited to say the least about it. I have so much reading and studying to do beforehand but I'll get there eventually.

See it is possible to ask a question and get an answer without offending anyone. Athough I don't know if I would be able to tell if jyohe was offended by reading their posts. LOL!

I don't think we'll see many morphs (even male codoms) much below 500 dollars anytime in the near future. There's just too much demand when the prices are low.

So start saving, or buy some hets or possy hets and make your own.

There is also a lot of variation in the normals, so you could just be happy with looking through the petstores for that "unique normal"

I feel that within 3 years you should be able to pick up pastel males sub $500..........CJ's right too, you could buy a het albino male from a reputable breeder for around $250, breed him with a normal female and then when the female offspring are large enough breed them back to the dad. With a bit of luck you will have an albino in there somewhere. If you can pick up a 100% het male and some poss het females you could get some morphs earlier..........good luck.
