Red, white, & blue snakes!!

palita Jul 27, 2005 10:11 AM

Hi all,

Just wanted to throw this out there . . .

I have been toying with the idea of buying a red, white, and blue snake collection for display, but am having trouble thinking of a blue snake:
red - bloddred corn
white - leucistic rat
blue - ???

Any ideas? A blue racer (Coluber constrictor) is only slight blue with a yellow belly. Are there any blue morph corns? Any other blue colored snakes you can think of? I know it is about the most unnatural color for a snake there is, but you never know - even a grayish blue color would work.

Thanks

Zane

but is unfortunately fairly rare in herps, especially snakes. Blue beauties (Elaphe taenuira ssp- spelling may be off) are sort of bluish gray, but not really true blue.

But green tree pythons are sometimes truly blue. And there is a great book available all about them (by Greg Maxwell, I think). I read it when it first came out - made me want to go get some, but I resisted, lol! If you want a blue python or boa, consider checking them out.

I see a bunch of really blue garter snakes around here in the Tampa Bay area, and I've seen 'em all over the state. There are also garters from the Pacific Northwest that are pretty blue as well. I can't really think of any others that haven't already been mentioned.

Blue striped garters would possibly work. They're green and turquiose or green and navy (atleast the ones I've seen in person). You will be hard pressed to find completely blue snakes, however.

(I've heard of people dying snakes colors via gatorade, but I wouldn't recomend it.)

You can go with a Blue Striped Garter (Thamnophis sirtalis similis), or a Florida Blue Eastern Garter (Thamnophis sirtalis sirtalis) I've seen some on the classifieds that have a pretty intense blue.

Maybe stick with just Red and White. You can get get both on the same snake and if the blotches are just right, they could look like maple leaves too

Thanks everyone!

I will look at the garters (indigos are nice snakes but just too big for what I want it for).

Thanks again,

Zane
