Any thoughts on how the heavy rain from Claudette will affect herping this following weekend? You think there will be more or less snakes out on the move? I'll be in the area, well actually northwest of Uvalde, but might consider taking a drive further west if it might seem productive...

I live in Uvalde. We received quite-a-bit of rain but LOTS of wind last night. When I woke up this morning, my Mexican Oak had blown over as well as some Cenizo and other plants. I also had a lot of my neighbors plants in my yard. I live about 50 yards from the Leona River and there were no problems with flooding. I have a friend up at Garner State Park right now. He said the Frio came up a bit, but as of right now...no where close to last years flood.
On a side note, right before the storm hit last night, the animals were all acting like they knew something was going to happen. I had at least 7 deer in my front yard standing right beside the house, the Med. Geckos were out in force (some inside the house) and my blue healer (who isn't afraid of anything) was petrefied. It's thundering now so maybe we'll get some more...J

Having hunted Val Verde County and environs many times during and immediately after a hard rain I can tell you that snakes will NOT be moving much, if at all. You will probably see lots of anurans (B. valliceps, B. punctatus, B. speciosus, and S. couchi, R. pipiens), but little else in the way of herps. If things have a chance to dry out significantly, then herps will move and road cruising can be very good. Personally, I would not visit Val Verde County until Sunday or Monday, and that's providing there is no more rain after last night.

As an aside, this has been a lackluster year for snakes in the Trans-Pecos. A very few herpers have reported moderate success in spotting snakes while road cruising or walking the cuts, but the average trip almost anywhere in the region has been a bust. My log this year is so far showing far fewer entries than it did for the same time last year for the same amount of trips. It will be interesting to see how the rain affects things in the short term.
