Hello,
How do you tell a boa from a python just by looks. It seems everyone can tell you just from a picture if the snake is a boa or python. How is this so?
Thank You.

More than anything else I have to confess...Familiarity. I read extensively and as a result between what I have seen in real life and pictures in the last 35 years leaves little out there if anything I haven't seen at least once.

I'd have to agree. Although I don't have that many years experience, I do have a good 15 years experience reading books, collecting in the field, going to zoos, herp clubs, and watching shows. As far as boas & pythons specifically, there are many species of boa and python, so your question is too general to give a better answer.
determining between different species of colubrids will take you longer, Boas and Pythons are uniquely marked and are fairly easy to recognize.
Couldn't agree more. Colubrids are by FAR the more difficult.

i have noticed that python's have larger and more pronounced heat sensing pits. boas can and do have them, but python's seem to be larger, especially with the arboreals. someone correct me if u disagree.
