There are two basic marker traits. The first is a black stripe running along either side of the belly near the last 1/3 of the tail. (Some prefer thick black lines. Others say any black lines.) The second trait is a clear three-scale-wide belly between the black stripes. (Some say this trait is not as important as the stripes themselves.)

It has been suggested that some breeders may distinguish the Het Pieds from the Normals (within a PH clutch) with 75-80% accuraccy. Who knows?

Personally, I have seen a few of these marker trait Het Pieds that seem to have an almost orange pre-ringer tint on the belly. I wonder if this is a third trait. Hmm...

Oh! And if you check the Ball Python Photo Gallery (link at top of page) and search for "marker" you will see a few examples.

If I were selecting animals from a 50% het pied clutch I would choose the ones with the "markers" over those without. However I don't think it's a given, after all I have normal animals with the marker and my 100% don't. So I don't hold much stock in them.

Here is the best example I have. He is a 1100gram male I am proving out (hopefully!). The black stripe is solid all the way to the tail and has 3 completely white belly scales in between.
