Input requested: 2nd clutch of eggs laid two months after first clutch.....

Raven01 Jul 27, 2005 04:31 PM

but the female has not been with the male again in that time period. The first clutch was 23 eggs, all of which hatched the beginning of this month. I was cleaning cages last night and found a clump of eggs under the water bowl - about 5-7 as best I can tell. Unfortunately they are somewhat dehydrated, probably laid in the last couple of days. I've set them up to incubate just in case. Is this normal and, should these eggs rehydrate, can I expect them to actually hatch? I was under the impression that double-clutching required a second breeding with the male but that isn't the case this time. Needless to say I was completely floored to find more eggs. Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Raven

corns can and will lay a clutch without a male at all

a second without a male ..

good eggs in second without a male between batches.

usually they lay alot of duds if no male has been reintroduced

they lay duds at times IF a male HAS been reintroduced....

they can lay third batches......

.........

they do what they want

keep all eggs till you know they are duds...

yes they can rehydrate.......and hatch

I was hoping if they were rehydrated they'd be okay. I just counted them - 2 small yellowish ones and seven white ones. They look a little more hydrated this evening, but still not round like they should be. Last night's 'emergency' setup was just with wet paper towels but I've set them up properly now with the damp moss so hopefully I'll see more improvement in their condition. Possible third clutches huh? I guess I'd better just leave her a nest box in there...and check it regularly. For her first breeding, she's been doing a lot of laying. I wasn't really expecting the first clutch to be honest, but the second one was a total surprise. Live and learn!

Thanks again.

They can even be bred more than once, and you can SEE them breed. And yet she never lays eggs! That happened to me for the first time this year with a GORGEOUS amel bloodred I had had as a hatchling and waited 3 years to breed!

I missed some eggs earlier this year and had to rehydrate them. I kept the vermiculite they were in pretty moist and saved all the eggs on the bottom of the pile. The eggs on the top didn't make it so you may want to cover them all the way up really well. I will also warn you that one of the babies was the first I've ever had born with a kink and it's pattern is weird so it might have been due to temps or something being out of the incubator so long. Good luck with them and let us know how it goes.

kink can be from temps always being at one level and not going up and down

can be from going up and down too much....

make sence?

can be from too wet...and wet eggs will give you babies that don't eat ...I been watching this for a few years ......

kinks can be genetic...

or just a one time fluke......

.........kinks....fully twisted.......one kink...kinks ony in tails.......no eyes.....one eye......no upper jaw....no bottom jaw.....open chest......double tails....double heads....siamese twins......"apple head"" with buggey eyes.....short head or short faces.......and the oddest one I ever got..NO HEAD and still alive.........just a nerve bundle at top of neck.*(no it didn't pip I cut it out)....

all stuff can happen...

eggs at top can be saved with a piece of cotton cloth dampened..paper towel can dry too fast I use cotton....or jut a little piece of plastic wrap laying losely on top of pile....

all kinds of stuff can happen....

and yet you can treat an egg like crap and it hatches fine....

........I had temps this year reach from 80 to 89 up and down alot....and it didn't hurt at all......hardly any kinks......

I think wet eggs are worse......

good luck......

I didn't realize too wet can be that much of a problem. Okay...now I'm freaking out. How wet is too wet? I guess I'm okay since I haven't seen any defects in my other babies and I don't remember any real trouble getting them to eat last year. Thanks for the head up though!

One new thing I have noticed is my larger females seem to have bigger more robust babies. My first year breeders (and I always wait until they're 3) seem to have smaller babies that take longer to eat. It makes sense about the size but I never thought about it until I saw it happening.
