safely decorating moist hidebox - glue dangers?

halebop Jul 27, 2005 05:00 PM

i've been using a stone cave as the moist hide box and it's where my leo spends most of her time (it's on the warm side of the tank) but it really doesn't hold the humidity well and she sometimes has trouble with her sheds on her toes (i've had to soak her feet lately)

i'm sure the deli cup arrangement would work better but i hate the look of a plastic container in her tank. if i were to glue flat river rocks to the outside or something like that it would look a lot better. but i'm worried the glue could be toxic. is it safe as long as i let it 100% dry before using it? has anyone done this safely before? any hints on what type of glue would work and be safe?

thanks!

you can use silicon. it should hold. just let it dry in a seperate room. the smell can be pretty strong. but its what holds your aquarium together so it must be safe when dry. i use it all the time.

a stone cave is not a moist hide box. I have a reasonably nice looking setup with a tupperware container, because my gecko needs it. I made the same mistake you did and failed to provide one for a few months. My little friend almost lost some digits due to my incapacity to provide a humid shelter for her. Don't make that mistake. Humble yourself and make a humid hide.

Why don't you use that plastic hide, but conceal it inside the stone cave? Just a thought.

id personally use aquarium silicone. its a little stronger, and tested with animals. but you want to be careful how much you use, if it is too thick it may never dry properly. ive seen a 3/8" thick bead of silicone not dry in the center after almost a year. best attaching the rock and then leaving a small amount of leftover silicone, (about as thick or thicker as used to attach the rock)on a peice of cardboard and judge the drying by that seperate sample. good luck and dont forget to wash it well before adding it to the tank!
