Feeding a Hermann hatchling, supplements etc...

nigelisabelle Jul 27, 2005 07:59 PM

Hi,
Could someone point me in the right direction on exactly how much (quantity) I should feed my baby Herm. Tort. I've heard I should feed him/her approx. 3 times a week.

Also is this over kill: (someone sent me this):

Use Rep-Cal Phosphorus-Free Calcium with Vit. D3 one day a week.
On different day give him/her Rep-Cal Herptivite.
On other day give calcium carbonate.

I want to make sure I'm giving my new Herm. enough supplements yet at the same time I don't want to over do it.

Thanks,
Joanne

A problem with supplements is that dosage is difficult to determine/control. However, I have had no known problems and my herd looks the same as wild with the diet I am providing. I think you should provide the Rep-Cal or other Calcium frequently. You might provide ground oyster shell and also cuttlebone, these are always available to my herd and they do not overdose but eat it liberally. Egg shells also. I very occassionally provide vitamins, I think they are overrated atleast if you provide a lot of low protien, high Calcium, low Phosphorous food via a varied diet. Also, Vit D is needed if indoor, but less so if outdoor. Good luck, and "moderation in all things" may apply.
