Need Help With Carolina Laws

discobc Jul 27, 2005 09:42 PM

Hi,
I'm having an extremely difficult time finding the laws of North Carolina concerning possession of eastern box turtles in that state. Can someone please help me learn if it is legal to keep this species in North Carolina? Restrictions? Permits needed? Thanks for the help in advance.

Check out this site (link below), and call them to find out the specifics. Or you can ask the same question on the Herp Law forum.

I checked out the site I'm linking you, to and it would appear that you don't require a special permit for posessing up to 5 specimens.
I could be wrong about that, though: you really should contact them yourself, to clarify.

This web site list the protected species in North Carolina

http://www.ncwildlife.org/pg07_WildlifeSpeciesCon/protected_species.pdf

This is a quote from the license guideline for wildlife collection at http://www.ncwildlife.org/pg01_License/pg1b1e.htm

"Individuals who hold less than five reptiles or less than 25 amphibians not on the endangered, threatened or special concern lists and not including spotted turtles (Clemmys quttata), Eastern diamondback rattlesnakes, Carolina pygmy rattlesnakes, and Eastern coral snakes are exempted from this license requirement."

Hope that helps!
