Bad conditions in pet stores..

platinumtlc Jul 27, 2005 10:37 PM

What if anything is being done to remedy this?

Now I work at a pet store chain in NJ, called NJ Pets.
I love the animals and I do my best to make sure their enclosures are safe and adequate.
I'm only a sales associate so I dont have much power when it comes to big decisions, and we had our petty cash cut off a while ago so more money would go into the managers pockets. Now we have to buy the lettuce and baby food and things we need.
We aren't perfect, and I would love to see better conditions and responsibility, but I doubt that will happen soon.

but I walk into smaller pet stores and see how small the enclosures are and how they have heat rocks and how dirty they are, and i'm like, how do they get away with this? Isn't there something being done? Shouldn't there be people inspecting these places, like herp experts who work for the government? I don't understand how pet stores can get away with lousy conditions and care. I would love to walk into some pet stores and shut them down.

I have to agree, I have seen some pretty bad things. And unfortunity it goes on all over. NOT all pet stores are bad, some have wonderful clean, stores and healthy animals .

I think it depends on how much the people running it really care about the animals as opposed to the CASH !

There are ways to report places that are selling animals that are not healthy or that are living in filth or bad conditions.

I'm sure your local humane society would be a place to start!

Hey I did not know you lived in Jersy,

Agreed,

Even here in Canada I have seen some things that are not adequate. I cannot compare to the stores in The United States, but from some stories and descriptions, it seems a tad better here in Canada.

However, regardless, these animals WHO ARE TAKEN OUT OF THE WILD, deserve the best of the best that we can give them. Do your part though, give your pets the best you can and set an example. Larger than needed cages and quality care, which I hope you should all be trying to do anyways.

If someone knows the US or CANADIAN authorities contact. Post them up. Im sure this has all been said before here and on many other message boards, but It cannot hurt.

What you are doing right here is the best way to start to correct the problem! My wife works at a PetStore chain and was running into the same frustration with seeing that the reptiles were in enclosures that meet their own general needs. Most of what she ran into was the fact that management honestly didn't know that there was a... better way... to house them. Since her and a couple of other reptile people spoke up and explained the problem. They have been extremely receptive to the changes and was willing to store use what was needed to properly house them.

It takes money to make money is the best thing to present them with. In the couple of weeks since they redid the enclosures sales are up in reptiles and it is clearly from the changes that were made. Start with pushing them to let you redo one enclosure and see what happens with it, then go from there.

If they are only concerned about money what a better way to show them what a difference the care can make to the bottom line! Lets face it, a bearded dragon in a desert enclosure properly equiped with a basking light, hide, rock/perch under the light, and a background will sell much quicker than one in a 10 gal aquarium in the dark.
