icedearthgoddess Jul 28, 2005 04:19 AM

Ok I posted further down the page an no one responded, so I try again... does any one know what type he/she (juve sex not known) is? I am not sure and I would really like some help to identify my new leo. If anyone can help I would really appreciate it. All suggestions are welcome! Thanks.

Laura, she is gorgeous And that blue "eyeshadow" is very pretty!

Without knowing/guessing where she came from, I honestly can't tell at that age, so perhaps others will offer educated guesses (come on guys!)

Right now, she looks very "Snow-ish" -- looking at the yellow tints on her legs and edging the current circle on her back, it looks like she will yellow up a bit into a pretty, unique looking spotted 'pastel' with some nice highlights. If she will spot/yellow at all and if so, how much, is something I can't tell. Either way, she is beautiful and I'm sure she'll stand out.

I hope you get some more responses -- I'd like to see other people's opinions too.

Please post updates as she grows!

I agree with CherriBomb. This looks like either a product of a snow breeding attempt, like a C grade snow, or a nice light pastel. As she ages, you'll see the colors change, and then you'll know for sure.

Do you think becasue is was an attempt project that she is related to a snow line or pastel line or something to that effect? I got her at my work, (PetsMart), so could this be possible? I wouldn't think the breeder/distributor we go through would sell her to us cheap so she could be resold.(I keep calling my gecko a her, not sure though, but until I know she is a her to me)

Snows were originally line bred, which means that breeders selectively bred leos with the physical traits they were looking for until the offspring were what we would now call a "Snow". Being that they were going for a leo with as white a body as possible and a minimalized black spotting. Line-breds typically exhibit varying degrees of yellow frosting.

Mack Snows, however, have a genetic basis.

Anyways, along these lines, 'normal' leopard geckos (such as what line-bred Snows began with and diverged from) can be produced with varying degrees of lightness and darkness, varying degrees of flat yellow to deeper, brighter yellows (like how Tangs went the opposite direction and were selectively bred for a richer yellow, now quite orange, coloration). Your little beauty appears to have light coloring and it looks like she will retain that. This is why I'm guessing she'll be what some people call a "pastel".

Without knowing lineage, its hard to guess, but yes, right now it looks like she came from a line of leos that have been bred away from typical 'normal' characteristics, towards lighter body colors. Whether or not you would suggest this is part of the beginning of someone's line-bred Snow project or an outcross...yes, she might be, but you're right -- they are less likely to show up in pet stores.

Best guess is to check out the leos that could possibly be her siblings. That would give you a better clue as to how she'll mature, depth of spotting, degree of yellowing, etc.

That said, I still think she's a looker and I'm curious to see her in a few weeks/months.
