Banded gecko identification--often an exercise in futility

rdbartlett Jul 28, 2005 07:23 AM

I noticed the questions on banded geckos posted below, so thought I'd share a few pix of all US species/subspecies but brevis (I'll post brevis later).
The identification of these geckos is currently based on pattern and the validity of subspecies is questionable. Patterns are notoriously variable and considerable ontogenetic (age related) pattern changes are typical.
At present locale is the best criterion.
I don't know how to post multiple pix, so there will be several headings here.
San Diego banded gecko, C. v. abbotti, first:

Thanks for all the Coleonyx pics. These geckos are absolutely my favorites to watch, their behavior is always surprising and funny.

Did you take all the photos yourself? Somewhere on my list of things to do is take a trip to Baja and try to spot a switaki. It's too bad there is no breeding of these or reticulatus, although I remember reading somewhere the opinion that switaki may not be as endangered as was once thought.

There's a terrific photo by Jason Jones at www.californiaherps.com/lizards/pages/c.switaki.html

In CA switaki is endangered only because it is at the extreme northern periphery of its range. It is common in Baja. Jason's pix are wonderful. rgds/dick

Amen to that, Dick!
