Crusty Snake Eye's

mark_184uk Jul 28, 2005 12:15 PM

I have a Cali King (as well as a few others) and have noticed that her eyes have an almost crusty like appearence, they also seem slightly swollen. She has revenlty shed but her eye caps came off as i check all of my snake sheds for this. ALTHOUGH i have recently purchased some other bits and bobs which had mites (unknown to me at the time) i am treating all the infected for it and the Cali King is one. Could a mite/s be the cause of this, may be they have attached themselves to the eyes and caused this swelling and crusty appearence!?

Any help with this would be grately appreciated as i own a very large collection and have never come accross this and fear it may spread of course the next plan of action is vet bills.

many thanks.
Mark

Mites are definitly the culprit. Once you are cretain the mites are dead soak the snake and (with a dull tipped probe!)CAREFULLY work your way around the snakes eye (under the lid) you will possibly find mites there besides dead tissue that may come loose.

Barring that, when the snake next goes into shed-soak it in a shallow container and it will help the snake remove the affected eye caps more easily.

Good luck.
