I got them from B.H.B. He said they were a simple recessive gene, not a combination of 2 genes. He said the original was a wild-caught from the Palomar, CA area. I haven't bred mine together yet. Last year the female was too small so I bred my male to an albino (lots of yellow) and produced normals that were double hets. I used a friend's female and she only had 4 eggs (3.1) My friend took the 1.1 and I got 2.0. We did that same paring this year, so I'm hoping for a female to create a line that originated from high yellows. I also tried to breed Ghost x Ghost this year and the female was intent on killing him, so I ended up breeding her with an Albino High White male. So more double hets (albino & ghost). I bred the male Ghost to a Mendota female. Those 9 eggs should be hatching next week. I will see if they are two different genes there too.
The eyes are dark, not red.

..and I know you agree with me on this Kerby. Not trying to start anything just agreeing with you that they are not a result of a DH project.
I used to breed the "Palomar Ghosts" about 15 years ago. Nobody was interested in them so I eventually sold off the adults. I always wondered why breders did not breed this gene into the amels and other reccessive traits, or did they?? If they did can anyone tell me what the results were?
The term "Ghost" is misleading. And I'm more than willing to call them whatever. If anything - hypo??? But right now they are recognized as such. It does need to be uniform - whatever that may be.
I bred the Ghost last year to an albino, so I now have double hets, and this year I bred my Albino High White male to a Ghost female. And bred my Ghost male to a Mendota, more double hets LOL

Those Ghost cali kings are pretty awesome.
Do you have any actual melanistic cali kings in your collection? Not het for albino? And not Mendota cali kings, or any of those other cali kings that are dark with barely visible bands.

Here is a male from last year's breeding of a Ghost x Albino. The albino had a lot of yellow and this young male is now showing a lot of yellow.
I'm anxious for my Albino High White x Ghost to hatch and see if they retain the white. Then I'll have 2 lines of double hets, one with white and one with yellow.
