Tegu in distress

scales Jul 28, 2005 07:55 PM

My female arg. b/w, Annie prolapsed her cloaca!! It happened while she was going bathroom, just popped out... She had been eating a bit more than normal a few days prior, but was drinking lots of water and had plenty of exposure to warmth and full spec and natural light. She had been eaten a whole mouse, and a mixture of bannana, raw egg (organic, fertilized if it makes a difference)and broccoli. I cleaned her with warm water, sterilized my hand, and, well, put it back as gently as I could... I called the vet, and he said to wait until I could get a sample from her to bring her in... her appointment is for tomorrow afternoon. (fed her baby food (applesauce mixed with some soy based baby formula and warm water) It has not came back out, but still I'm worried. She started life on a rough start, i had to hand (not force)feed her when I first got her she was so malnurished. But, that was 2 years ago and she's been doing fine, growing like a weed and strong. Is there anything else I can do for her?? Should I change her diet? She gets mice, eggs, fruit, veggies, and lean raw meats, and occasionaly canned catfood. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

My tegu had this problem when I was power feeding it mice. I took him/her to the vet and they had to give in an enema.. well $100 later they told me that it had a ton of hair in it. SO what I did was feed it smaller meals, crickets and pinky rats more often like every other day. IT has been doing great ever since then. You can try feeding it the SDZ diet also along with mice. Good luck

Dehydration and inadequate temps are the causes of impactions, not the hair .

Too much food that is too large in volume (which takes longer to digest ) and not enough heat or too little water /humidity is what causes this .

Your problem is dietary and is a direct result of eating " veggies, and lean raw meats, and occasionaly canned catfood"

So, no broccoli? She does not get cat food often, I hav fed it once or twice... no more now though. No raw meat though? Just mice and kingworms?? Or is it the lean part thats a problem?

If you want to avoid problems

No broccoli or any other veggie

No soy milk or any other milk product (fake or real )

No eggs

No lean meats

No cat or dog food

The easiest way to balance a diet is to only feed the correct size rodent , king mealworms (dusted with calcium) , and small amount of fresh fruit roughly twice a week

Correct size rodent for an adult tegu = adult mice or very small rats (not pinkies or fuzzies or anything larger than a small rat - larger rats take to long to digest and just make them FAT )
