How often should I feed my legless lizard (sheltopusik)?

Fuehreress Jul 28, 2005 11:28 PM

Pet store said every other day, with the amount of 1 teaspoon.

Is this correct?

Andddd...is it just mines or do all sheltos make messes of their food?

glad to see someone else interested in these lizards.i keep a few of the amarican glass lizards but dont at the time have room for a sheltopusik.what are you feeding them with a spoon.i would feed them live food such as crickets, kingworms, the occasional mouse and so on.how big is the animal.

He's too fiesty to feed with a spoon so I leave his food out in his food dish and leave the room. I usually feed him live food, he seems to like it better than the dog food, which sometimes he doesn't even touch.

He's about 32 inches long.

do not feed him dog food to often as it tends to make the animal overweight and obese on occasions but is a good occasional snack.it sounds like your doing the feeding schedule right so good luck with your new lizard

Hello,

I would recommend a Mon. Wed. Fri. schedule for feeding your sheltopusik. At the size you're quoting you have an adult. I have two that are at least that big if not bigger. Those I feed between 14 and 16 insects [either superworms - Zoophobas spp. - crickets, or when I have them, South American Wood Roaches]. On the last day I feed either a fuzzy mouse [frozen/thawed, not live] or other prey item like night crawler earthworms [3 to 4 if they're really big], snails [ZooMed or Exoterra], or high-quality canned dog-food such as Iams. One caveat though, as mentioned by the other poster, don't feed dog food too often - I would say only once a month. Dog and cat food tend to be a bit too high in fat although of the two, dog food is better. I substitute for dog food that could be more of a regular staple would be ZuPreem canned Monitor Lizard Diet. If you have any other questions about these interesting lizards feel free to post here or email me directly - I authored an article on their captive care a few years ago and I currently house a group of five of them with intentions of captive breeding.
