possible sick tegu....?

blackbook Jul 29, 2005 12:06 AM

hey guys, my arg. b&w has been acting a little funny. he has been twitching and today he did a death roll looking thing for no reason at all. i have no idea what this could be... he eats perfect is as tame as can be and goes to the bathroom on a perfect schedule. what could this be? i also noticed that his spine appears not to be perfectly straight...is that normal. he walks fine but when he's standing still he is usually in a bent up position. please let me know what you think.

All six of my tegus are really "Twitchy" if we are describing the same thing...I guess its just how they are. Either that or they are ALLL sick...hope not..,

If all six of your tegus are twitchy then all six of the are ill . It is not normal for a healthy tegu to twitch . Twitching is caused by a calcium defficiency ... see a vet asap

Your tegu needs to see a vet.
It has a serious calcium problem.

thank you for the input! as it turned out he just wondered too close to my cactus plants and got a few prickles in his belly...that's why he was twitching and thrashing, he was trying to get them out! it took the vet about 2 hours to get them all out and now he's back to his old self!!! i don't have a catus plant in my apt. anymore though.

ooohhhhh thats what you mean by twitchy...I meant my tegus get really animated and spastic when they are excited...I guess 'twitchy' is too general of a term

Ive seen this in another collection once before I new what it was, its a form of MBD causing the bacbone to loose calcium and colapse on the spinal cord, this animal needs a vet now. Powder calcium wont help, liquid calcium will probably be given for a while as it cannot absorb other forms in that state, I hope it makes it. The last one I saw this with was a beautiful blue tegu that a friend recieved in trade.
