Do Longissimus go off food sometimes

nechushtan Jul 29, 2005 04:24 AM

My '04 Longissimus hasn't eaten in over a month and I'm starting to worry. He's still active but just flat ignores the fuzzies I offer. When do most people consider it reasonable to force feed? I'm really concerned as we've lost 2 Schrencki in the last 7 months or so, both of whom went off food before they suddenly died. Any thoughts?

I would find a very good veterinarian and let him know what's been happening to you and get his advice. Force feeding is the last thing you should do. If it's any kind of enteritis then that has to be cured first.
Good luck

Thanks John... I was going to take him in tomorrow but decided for one more shot. I put two large fuzzies in his cage and within a minute he was out of his hole pouncing on the first one. I could have sworn he'd become a vegan with the way he would just slide right by fuzzy after fuzzy, but I guess the hunger finally got him.
Of interesting note, he's calmed quite a bit in the last few months. He hasn't struck in probably 4 months now and generally seems much less perturbed when I grab him. Hope yours are doing as well.

Ron:
That sounds good. If everything goes well and there are no problems then he's just getting past a mid-summer food strike. But if he regurgitates them then I would skip any more feeding attempts and go straight for a good herp vet.

Good luck
John
