Malaysians vs Bankas vs Sumatrans

5rings Jul 29, 2005 10:24 AM

This is probably a question for Dave and Tracy but some of you might have done some of your own emperical research and figured this out yourself. I have owned Brongersmai from all 3 locations according to the sellers. I always take provenance with a degree of skepticism but after a while you build up enough evidence to see some trends. I have a really hard time telling Bankas from Malaysians both in looks and temperament (both can be fairly poor pets at times). Some Sumatrans also give me trouble, though they seem to have notable differences in coloration. Has any body done any taxonomy work to note morphology differences (scalation, coloration, size, shape differences)?

I would love to do the study myself. Know anybody in those three locations who can get documented snakes from each?

Steve, the only noticable difference that I've been told is that the Bankas have a long shovel like snout. There isn't really a huge difference but I can tell a difference if looking at two animals at the same time. From what I've been told the Malaysians and Sumatrans are not distinguishable unless the importer knows the point of origin. And even then its usually where there shipped from, and not necissarily where they were captured. Someone that regularly deals with high levels of imports such as Bushmaster might be able to pick out other small differences. From the conversations I've seen there really isn't much to go on tho. Hope that helps atleast a little.

Love that fat blood in the pix. I wouldnt mind a trip over there to do a little snake research either. Do snakes go in carry-on or can they be checked into baggage?

Are your WC Malaysians a little hard to handle? I recently aquired a CB pair of Malaysian and they are pretty aggressive especially for CB animals. I have heard others say the same things.

I would also point out that my Malaysians have very strong, bright colors with tremendous contrast. I didnt know if this was normal for animals from Malaysian.

hi steve,
tq for the compliment!!!!
here blood are a bit hard to get since the covernment has imposed banned on all Wc blood 3yrs ago because the number are declining in the wild due to chinese people who prefer to eat them(not all)all WC are being kept secretly from the wildlife dept because the is no licence issued for blood compared to retic.here python keeper must obtained a keeping licence and must renew it every year.

(Do snakes go in carry-on or can they be checked into baggage)what do you mean by that?can you explain further.
based on my experience (i manage to deal with more than 10 Wc blood)the temperement are varies, some can be tame some are not.some take longer time some take less time.
i manage to tame (she still hissing but no bite until today)my female in two week.but my male still will strike if he feel threaten.last week i receive 3 newly caught for my fren and one of the male i thnk can be tame with more handling because he doesnt turn his head toward my hand when i touch his body.the rest are very aggresive will attack any moving things.

regarding the colour, its still varies, here we have yellow, brown to red as red as coca cola can.i see twice!!!!

feel free to visit malaysia, but i cannot assure that you can many WC blood as the only come out during the rainy season.if you want to come pls come on december since that is my semester break and i can bring you around malaysia.
anything else?
Ali
