Feeding baby W.Hog

Lia Jul 29, 2005 12:17 PM

I bought a baby Western hog at recent herp show. I lost the breeders card otherwise I would email him(he posts here but I forget his name) Its great looking and great eater no complaints.
I feed him in a deli cup. I wanted to know how long you have to do that for? I imagine as they get bigger you can just put the pinkie in the hide area with them?
I have had him 3 weeks and he has ate in the deli cup like 4 pinkies average one every 5 days.
The pinkies are live but I prefer to get frozen pinkie than thaw it out can I just switch with no problems?
Sorry for all the questions but he doesnt like to go in deli cup and seems to ignore the pinkie unless you put them both in deli cup but the breeder did tell me to do this but I dont know how long you need to do it for.
thank you

Feeding in the deli cup offers some security. If it will feed on live in the cup but not in its box or cage try adding a small hide. Put the live pink in the opening of the hide or in it. If he still does not feed, then that's your answer. He's not ready to feed anywhere other than the deli cup.
I start mine off with frozen thawed, not live. If I have to switch to live then I switch back to frozen when they can take two pinks. I feed a live off of small tongs / tweezers and then give them the frozen thawed as their second food item. They eventually switch over. No reason to not try offering a frozen thawed pink in the deli cup. If he doesn't feed, refrigerate it and try again the next day.
