Calico Cow Sucker!!

KE Jul 16, 2003 01:09 PM

Here he is:

This snake was discovered in Jefferson County, Kentucky. In our Commonwealth, there are different names for what most people call black rat snakes. In south central Kentucky they are called chicken snakes. In Jefferson county they are called Cow Suckers. Becasue I am breeding him and all my other Jefferson county snakes with others from this county, my mutants are locality specific. I wanted this to be reflected in their names when I thought about what to call these new morphs. I also wanted for the tastes and flavors of the peolple of our Commonwealth to be reflected in this herpetological treasure! I hope you all enjoy the pic! I have bred this guy already and have six possible hets growing up. My fingers are crossed!! As to why farmers call these snakes cow suckers: When I was a kid I spent much time working a farm in Trimble county. On this farm, all snakes were killed. I one time asked my grandfather why he was killing a cow suvker. The snake had bitten his finger. He had jerked away. He told me to study the mark on his hand. I did. Later that month he brought me into the barn where a cow was nursing a calf. It had an utter that was infected. It was covered with red streaks that looked just like the bite marks. This is how the myth got started in our neck of the woods. K.E.

I have 4 morphs of blackrats and it's really cool to see my favorite snake becoming more desireable in the hobby.New morphs make it more interesting, especially when one devotes a few years to a project that proves genetic.Good luck with them.

Hi there Brian!
I don't have any photos of those guys yet. They look like normal black rat snakes, er I mean cow suckers! This snake was never in a pet store. The morph you are referring to is the Dixie Dumpling. I'll post a pic of that snake very soon!! Thanks for the interest dude!! K.E.
