Does anyone have tips for stimulating appetites?

lzrdldy530 Jul 29, 2005 04:49 PM

I bought an exceptional fluorescent orange male from a breeder who was feeding CGD exclusively-no crix, and this little guy doesn't seem to have any appetite. He shuns crickets-maybe he doesn't know that they're food, and I mix his Gargoyle gecko diet w/Bolthouse Berry Booster or Strawberry-Banana for its fragrance and flavor, but he eats almost nothing! A female I purchased at the same time from the same breeder is a great eater, and got large enough to breed, and she either learned to eat crix from her cagemates or instinct kicked in! But this little guy is apt to get his a$$ whupped if I put a female with him, and maybe get an inferiority complex to boot. Any ideas?

If you're really motivated and are willing to whip up some good stuff, try this receipe.
"Super Mixture" Receipe:
2 bananas
1 mango
3 med. apricots
2 peaches
5-7 strawberries (I only use the inside of the strawberry...the seeds are cut off)
low-fat plain yogurt
1 jar chicken baby food

Blend everything together and you've got yourself some "Super Mixture". This receipe was given to me by a friend, and I have to say that it's worked out great, even the pickiest cresteds love it! Keep in mind that the receipe can be reduced and it's not set in stone, you can add another peach, take away a banana, etc. Prepared exactly like this, it lasts me a while, and I have a lot of geckos. Good luck!

I forgot to print this recipe out and was trying to go by memory while shopping at the store.

Since I only have 2 baby geckos, I only blended together one small banana, a few strawberries, part of a peach, some mango, and chicken and pear babyfood.

I totally forgot to buy yogurt. Do you feel that's an important ingredient? Maybe the clincher?

I also had a hard time finding just chicken babyfood. All I could find was chicken and veggies, chicken and apple, or chicken and pear. So I went with the chicken and pear. Is it key to add just chicken babyfood?

They only took a few licks off my finger and of course I can't really tell if they ate any. I imagine if they poop later, they must have.

They just didn't seem highly eager to eat it.

They LOVE their crickets, but only pick at the babyfood or fresh fruit that I give them on the days in between cricket feedings.

Do I have picky geckos?

The geckos I have that eat crickets would prefer to eat them ALL the time, kind of like a kid who can choose between ice cream and broccoli-----no contest. I have noticed that there's no point in offering CGD within 2 days of everyone getting their fill of crickets. After that, they are hungry enough that they will eat it. I'm leary of offering baby food in any form; I don't want mine to get spoiled on it and not accept the CGD after that.
The male in question, however, is so wonderful that I'm willing to try anything.

Oh he's beautiful!!

I've never given my geckos just the CGD. I've always mixed it with baby food. I figured since they are getting a good amount of dusted crickets, the whole point of CGD is to not have to feed them crickets, so I didn't want to overdo it in the protein department.

The thought crossed my mind that maybe they are just too full from pigging out on crickets that the next day they are just not hungry. It'd make sense since their tummies are so small.

I'll give them some more 'Super Mixture' tonight to see if they appear more interested.
