Looking for help choosing a cage

melon88 Jul 29, 2005 06:54 PM

We are thinking of upgrading the cage for my son's BP. Presently we are using a 40 gal glass Breeder. We have been looking at some of the manufactured cages by Boaphile, Vision, and Animal Plastics. We hope it will be the last one he will ever need. We are looking info on what to get and best type of options for heating and lighting etc. Any help from those out there using any of these, or any others for that matter, would be appreciated.

I would recommend either the boaphile or animal plastics. I currently own 2 boaphile racks and have first hand knowledge of animal plastics racks and cages. They are both quality stuff, but I have a few suggestions for both.

If you're going boaphile, I would suggest either the 421D (4' cage) or the 321D (3' cage). As for options, add in cage heat, florescent lighting, and hinges. Total cost ~$285 shipped. My only qualm with boaphile is they don't offer glass doors. I talk about this more below.

If you're going with animal plastics, I would suggest the T10 (4' cage) because it's the same price as the T3 (a 3' cage). Make sure to get the glass doors. They cost a bit more, but are WELL worth it as acrylic scratches quite easily and can also cloud due to exposure to cleaning agents or even direct sunlight. Add belly heat and fluorescent fixture. Total $305 plus $35-$50 shipping.

The biggest difference I see between AP and Boaphile is the use of heat cable in AP's cages/racks and heat tape in Boaphile cages/racks.

Make sure that with either cage, if you don't already have one, buy a good digital thermostat. Boaphile sells ranco's for WAY too much. If you have any electrical aptitude at all you can buy the base Ranco unit on ebay and splice in a power strip for ~$60 total.

Thanks for the help! Looks like at matter of personal preference, but apparently the glass is a better door choice than the acrylic.
