Boxie stays in water all day

norristhenut Jul 29, 2005 07:36 PM

I have two male box turtles that have been together for a few years now with no problems they live out in my garden about 15 x 20. Lately Tom has been staying in his water dish all day, like up to 10-12 hours. This has been going on now for about three weeks. He still eats and acts quite normal except he just spreads out in the water dish all day. I was curious if anyone else has seen this typeof behavior.
Thank you very much

Some of ours do the same thing in the heat of the summer. They'll stay in the water for hours, even days at a time, although they do come out to eat. They no longer have their mud hole since I fixed the leaking pond: that was another favorite spot for them.
We had a few days of 100 F weather here last week, and two or three of ours were quite content to stay submerged. Estivation is an effective coping mechanism for them in this heat.

They may be sick. Mine did that when they had a Res. Infection.

Check their nose and mouth for bubbles.
