Educating the Masses

I am very new to dart frogs but had something happen today that shocked me and I wanted to see if this type of this was common:

This morning I went to my son's school's open house(5th grade)and somehow got into a converation with my son's Science teacher regarding reptiles and amphibians. I told her that I was looking to setting up a terrarium at home to eventually house dart frogs. She quickly told me that she was totally against getting them because of my children.and the dangers of bringing a venomous animal into our house... I first looked at her and was completely confused. I explained that they were actually poisonous not venomous. She corrected me stating that animals that delivers it toxin through fangs are venomous... Fangs? At this point I tried to switch to another animal so we started talking about ball pythons. She explained that she approved of those since pythons have no fangs or teeth to bite with... No teeth? Ugh! I think this is going to be a long year!

Poison Dart Frogs are still poisonous in our collections. Granted these frogs are not near as poisonous as they are in the wild, but if one were to eat these frogs...I know of people who have licked these frogs in captivity (I have no idea why) and had severe reactions to just licking them. I guess that could be a concern if your kids were young and you had a frog like a terribilis that would actually let your kid touch them.

I can see the concern there. I have heard of people licking frogs to get high but I sure wouldn't pick a dart frog as a test animal for that! LOL. Fortunitly my children learned a while back that not all animals are for touching, though even with that knowledge a dart frog would be probably the most toxic I would ever bring into the house. I just can't believe that a 5th grade science teacher would be so far off with animal knowledge!
