What is your favorite colubrid to keep in captivity?

markg Jul 16, 2003 01:27 PM

What kind of colubrid has been a favorite captive for you? Reasons might be for ease of care, attitude or rarity. Mine is boring: Cornsnake. Not rare or expensive, but just a darn pleasure to keep.

Any Drymarchon.

They are big and active and messy as hell, but I love 'em.

Beauty rats (Elaphe taeinura)... They're like big long skinny corns and you can't beat the pattern.

I'll cast my vote for Grayband Kings - Blair phase in particular. Gorgeous, tame, good eaters.

But...after seeing Mosey, I'm jealous, Scott! One of these days, I'd love to pick up a Brooksi or two! michaelb

My brooksi kingsnake, Mosey. She has lots of personality and is very active during daylight. Below is a pic of her, Scott.

Tough choice,

But my Brooksi's have the most personality of any snake I have ever kept. (with my Mexican Black Kingsnake a close second). No they are not rare or expensive... But my large male is just a big ol' dufus!!! (named him jethro). Eats like a horse, loves to be held, kids love him and come over all the time to see him.

Out of all my snakes, I own more pits than anything. For me, they have been the most awesome pet snakes. All of mine are puppy dog tame, enjoy handling, heck my northern pine was so relaxed in my arm that he fell asleep one time.

It seems that pits are more aware of their surroundings as well. Nothing like an adult pit looking around the room and scoping the place out.

Here is a pic of my albino Sonoran gopher. Enjoy!

Philodryas Aestivus... Day active(and ACTIVE MEANS ACTIVE), intelligent(as far as sanakes go), and fast.

Just picked up a pair of babies on monday and they are amazing. Very cool little snakes, easy to breed, real good feeding response. Meaning they take a quick sniff and nail the pink and then throw coils around it.Also a very fast strike. I hope to get more soon.

I forgot about those. I had a baby AHS for a few weeks babysitting it for someone. What an easy undemanding neat little snake that was. I recently reduced my collection drastically but I'm still going to get an AHS tonight. My collection is now only featuring one American snake. The others are from other continents.

A pair of bullsnakes, for their alert yet gentle personalities, and a trio of malagasy speckled hognose for their interesting behaviors.
