whats the difference?

goregrind Jul 30, 2005 01:28 AM

is there an actual difference between these three species or is it just something to do with where the particular snake is found? and is so can the three species breed? just a random thought that puzzles me just about the same with rat/corn and king/milk snakes

Jake,
If you'll scroll up you'll find a list of things on kingsnake. There you will see Care Sheets/FAQ/Features. Hit that and you will find another list. Go to Pituophis Page and click on it. You'll get a lot of info there.

There are genetic and visual tells separating the species. They can interbreed, but doing so is not usually considered to be the right thing to do. I've also seen someone selling corn snakes crossed with pine snakes, so they can even hybridize those and get offspring. And yes, they do live in different places. Grab a good field guide and you can read what all the identifying traits for each species is.
