protuding "dots" near cloaca

reptilemama Jul 30, 2005 04:47 PM

While sexing my crested geckos, I noticed two white "dots", one on either side of the cloaca, and on the hemipenile bulges (or where they would be on females), and was wondering what they are. I found them on both sexes, so they are obviously not an indicator of any kind, but I was just wondering if they have a known function. Any ideas?

They're known as "cloacal spurs". They're completely normal. Sometimes when you have a juvenile crested, you can guess if it'll be a male or female by looking at the size. Males generally have larger spurs.... however this method of sexing is far from being 100% accurate.

They are normal and are used in breeding to get the female interested in mating.
