Adding another BD?

tuff_stuff_86 Jul 30, 2005 06:47 PM

I got a baby BD right now that’s a female and she’s 7" right now. I really, really want another one, they don’t get that big, and their wonderful and very attractive lizards and I want to purchase another female from dachiu.com. I know I should keep them separated for some time, is it ok to keep the other female in a 10 gallon for a little bit of time and IF it dose not work out with the other female I can get another 50 gallon for that female. But how should I go along with slowly putting the female in with the other one? Should I let them stay in the cage together at a short period of time then take her out and repeat the process and gradually increase the amount of time she’s in the cage? I feed my current BD in a separate box for feeding and I would probably feed them separate. I just need some information about how to introduce the new female to my current BD.
-Thank You
Matt

For a beginner i don't suggest ever putting two beardies together especially when you don't know 100% (at that age) what sex they are. One, even a hatchling shouldn't be in a 10 gallon as the temp gradient is very hard to get (110 hot side, 80s cool) try a 20 at least for a 7". But she will need a 50 soon, but you might get the adult tank (70-100) and just slowly increase space as she grows. ONE adult beardie needs about 6-8' feet floor space, 9-10' for two. the bigger, the more happy they will be. Two females CAN be housed together the most successfully, precautions just ahve to be made and the proper setup.
I personally housed two females together, not anymore because one was sold, and i did so very successfully. I just induced them on netural territory. Yes, one was dominate, but it didn't affect how much the other ate cause they were close in size. *both ate like pigs lol* Once, they met, they lived together for a month with no issues. The main thing was i 1) had a LOT of space (50 gallon for 2 10" and multiple food dishes, basking spots, etc.
At this point, i don't suggest you get another one unless you can shell out the money to get two completely separate setups. If there is any size difference, stress and domination with occur. this leads to eating probs and vet bills.
Hope this helps!
