Mites in FF cultures?

buckhorn Jul 16, 2003 02:07 PM

Is there anything I can do to get rid of mites in my FF cultures? Or do I even need to worry about them?

If i get mites in my cultures I put the whole thing in one of my tanks, my leucs love hunting the tiny mites. I keep all of my cultures under constant fluorescent light, and I use coffe filters for the tops and I havent had a mite problem in months

when i had a problem with mites in my FF. cultures i kept them all on fly paper so that the mites wouldn't get everywhere. i also got some packing tape and placed it around the culture cups up close to the top of the cup right under the lid sticky side out so what ever mite got out stuck to the tape. then i isolated them so that my new cultures wouldn't become infested also. it took about a month or two to get rid of them but i eventually got rid of them all. Also if you bought the cultures from a store you should call them up and tell them about your problem they might give you new cultures.

hope this helps.

sometimes the mites may become so prolific that they can escape into your rugs and plants. Chemicals are available. You may want to check some of the fly advertisers at the top of arrow frog forum. I know I have purchased some Tedion solution for mite control through the drosophila co. It works very well. Mista

just use a 50:50 white vinegar:water mix in place of just water and they'll be gone in no time
